Ebenezer Dean, Jr. (1811-1871)
Mary Gould Farrington Dean (1816-1888)
Born in South Dedham on March 31, 1811, Ebenezer Dean, Jr. was the son of Ebenezer Dean (1772-1851) and Lois Morse Dean (1773-1841).
He was the grandson of Jonathan Dean and Elizabeth Balch Dean, and the great grandson of Rev. Thomas Balch.
A farmer like his own father, Ebenezer married Mary Gould Farrington on December 10, 1837. She was the daughter of David Farrington and Ruth Gould Farrington (lot 27).
The couple had several children: Albert, Mary Ann, Mary F. (later married Thomas F. Lawrence), Abigail, Frances M. (later married to Willard Dean, lot 66), Mary, and Henry.
Ebenezer Dean Jr. died on September 11, 1871 at the age of 60, a suicide.
His widow, Mary Gould Farrington Dean, died on January 7, 1888 of kidney disease.
The historic Dean house was originally situated on the north side of what later became Dean Street, east of Rte. 1. Various branches of the Dean family farmed land throughout the area roughly bounded by Pleasant Street, Neponset Street, and the Neponset River. The house was built around 1700 in the then typical “saltbox” architectural style with a center chimney. In the late 20thcentury, Paul Eysie had the house dismantled, moved, and rebuilt on his Walpole Street property. The house’s façade can be seen facing the Bond Street playground.
