On March 9, 1872, Joel Weatherbee was the first death recorded in the new town of Norwood. According to Norwood’s First Annual Town Report, Weatherbee was 73 years, 8 months, and 28 days old. He died of paralysis.



Joel Weatherbee was born on June 11, 1798 in South Dedham. He was the son of David Weatherbee and Lucy Wight Weatherbee (lot 81). Like his father, Joel Weatherbee was a farmer.

On May 31, 1820, Joel Weatherbee married Elizabeth “Betsey” Graham, who had been born in Walpole on October 31, 1796. Her parents were William Graham and Lucy Bullard Graham.


The couple had six children: Lucy, Jabez, Mary A. Elizabeth, David, David Franklin, and Joel, Junior.


Four years after her husband’s death, Betsey Weatherbee died on May 22, 1876. Her death was attributed to old age.


David Weatherbee, born in 1832, died on November 14, 1833 at 14 months. His gravestone too is in lot 72.
