Hannah Ellis Rhoads (1784-1854)

Lewis Rhoads (1784-1872)


Hannah Ellis was born on December 19, 1784. She was the only daughter of Oliver Ellis and Mary Colburn Ellis (lot 100).

 

Hannah Ellis married Lewis Rhoads on November 7, 1807. Lewis Rhoads was the son of Eliphalet and Mercy Holland Rhoads (sometimes spelled Rhodes or Rhoades) (lot 114).

 

Lewis and Hannah Rhoads had five children: Hannah Ellis Rhoads (1808-1863); Mary C. Rhoads (1810-1854); Martha H. Rhoads (1812-1875); and twins, Emeline Rhoads (1818-1875 and Eveline Rhoads (1818-1910). Lewis Rhoads was a farmer.

Their children all remained in the local area. Hannah married Joseph Day; Emeline married Willard Gay; Mary C. married John Hartshorn; Martha H. married Richard Hartshorn; Eveline did not marry.



 

Hannah Ellis Rhoads died on September 4, 1854 of consumption (tuberculosis). She was 70 years old. She was interred in lot 100 in Old Parish Cemetery with her parents and brother. The base to her gravestone was uncovered in the fall of 2022 by volunteers and her stone was reset in the spring of 2023.



 

Eighteen years after his wife’s death, on September 14, 1872, Lewis Rhoads passed away at the age of 88. His death was attributed to old age. Lewis was interred in Old Parish, lot 49, which belonged to his daughter, Hannah, and husband, Joseph Day. In 1888, the remains of Lewis Rhoads were removed to Highland Cemetery, lot 112.
