There are more questions than answers regarding the Horton family. William Horton and his extended family arrived in Norwood sometime between 1870 and 1880. The U. S. Census of 1870 records the family in Newburyport, Massachusetts; by 1880, however, they were residing in Norwood.
In that 1880 census, William Horton, 50, who was born in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and his wife, Harriet Brooks Horton, also born in Nova Scotia, were living in Norwood. William Horton was working in the Railroad Car Shops and Harriet was keeping house. Also living in the household were their son, John W. Horton, another car shop employee, and his wife, Emily K. Haynes Horton. They were both born in Nova Scotia as well. It is unknown how long the family remained in Norwood. The 1890 U. S. Census is unavailable and by 1900, John and Emily Horton were residing in East Hartford, Connecticut, along with one son, Richard Horton, born in 1883.
Harriet J. Brooks Horton died on November 10, 1886 in Cambridge, Massachusetts of heart disease. The stone which was erected in Old Parish Cemetery for her is badly damaged. The fragment left standing reads: Erected by \ WILLIAM HORTON \ in memory of his wife \ HARRIET J. \ Died Nov. 10, 1886. \ Aged 54 yrs 6 mos.
When William Horton passed away is unknown.
John and Emily Horton had two children who died as infants. They were both interred in the Old Parish Cemetery. John W. Horton’s date of death is unknown. His wife, Emily Haynes Horton appears in the 1930 U. S. Census living in Boston with her sister, Priscilla Haynes Leggett.
Priscilla Haynes Leggett was interred in Old Parish Cemetery on September 10, 1939; Emily K. Haynes Horton was interred in Old Parish Cemetery on February 5, 1941.
