Richard Ellis (1764-1766) lot 234
Richard Ellis (1768-1773) lot 233
Richard Ellis (1777-1856) lot 39
William Ellis (1733-1806) and his wife, Olive Fairbanks Ellis (1742-1806) were the parents of eleven children. Three of these children were named Richard.
The first Richard Ellis was William and Olive’s first child. He was born on October 15, 1764 and died on April 14, 1766. His gravestone in lot 234 reads:
In memory of
Richard Ellis son
of Mr. William Ellis
& Mrs. Olive his wife,
Died April ye
14th, 1766 in
ye 2d year
of his age.
Richard Ellis the second was born on November 15, 1768. He lived for nearly five years and passed away on April 30, 1773. His stone, next to his brother’s, reads:
In Memory of
Richard, son of
Mr., William Ellis
& Mrs. Olive his
wife. Died April ye
30th 1773, in ye 5th
year of his age.
Apparently determined to have a son named Richard, William and Olive named a third boy Richard. He was born on January 4, 1777. This Richard lived into adulthood. He married Abigail E. Dean, had four children of his own, and died on March 10, 1856 of old age. He is interred in lot 39 with his son, Caleb, and his family.
Although both sets of grandparents are interred in Old Parish, the graves of the boys’ parents – William Ellis and Olive Fairbanks Ellis, both of whom died in 1806 – have not been found. They may have been lost during the devastating storm in the mid-1850s that caused many graves to be washed away.
